Need help on an old 1890 Benjamin Franklin Stamp?

I came across a very old stamp collection and was looking through them an seen a unique marking on a 1890 Benjamin Franklin stamp. At first glance it appeared to be canceled, but the letters "LR" on the stamp are in red ink. Anyone have any have any idea why there are red letters on this one stamp?
